How to fudge data if you are a global warming alarmist.

Are the seas rising? Of course they are. They have been rising since the last ice age. So the question about “global warming’s” influence is; Are the seas rising FASTER because of atmospheric CO2 produced by man?

The alarmists are so happy that we had three large hurricanes this year. It’s a great opportunity to say that “global warming” is the cause. In a recent op ed in the New York Times [Source: How We Know It Was Climate Change, By Noah S. Diffenbaugh] the author shows us some graphs. Focusing on Hurricane Harvey (no question that was a bad one) he shows the following graph of sea level rise along the gulf coast and tells us it was one reason the hurricane was “so bad”:

Wow – 3.0 times greater sea level, a 12 inch rise! That would be Yuge, as our President would say.

Let’s check with NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). They have been charting sea level in Galveston Bay for more than a century. As I stated, the seas have been rising steadily – the “ice-age-thing.” The important lines are the red and black lines. I don’t want to give a statistics tutorial but the black lines tell us with 95% certainty what the sea level is doing. Take a good look.

 

Let’s look for the dramatic rise that Mr. Diffenbach portrayed in his dissertation. Did you see the massive jump starting in 1980? No?

Now I’d like you to compare the NOAA graph and Mr. Diffenbaugh’s graph. There are indeed spiky increases and decreases on the NOAA graph, just like the Diffenbaugh graph. But, when one examines the mean and confidence intervals (the red and black lines) on the the NOAA graph it is easy to see that there has been no increase in the RATE OF RISE of sea level in the Gulf of Mexico starting in 1980. However, if one cleverly chooses the right “SPIKES” you can show a dramatic increase in sea level. No one said global warming alarmists were STUPID, just DISHONEST!
