The seas are rising – NOT!

I’m getting bored with writing about all the predictions by global warming alarmists that are wrong. Among the most dramatic predictions revolves around sea level rise.

Let’s recount the looming disaster:

  • It will cause sea levels to increase and swamp coastal areas all over the world.
  • It will contaminate our drinking water
  • It will interfere with farming
  • It will change coastal plant life
  • It will threaten wildlife populations
  • It will hurt the economy – tourism and real-estate industries in coastal areas will be devastated as prime beachfront properties and recreational areas are washed away by rising waters.

Wow! That’s pretty bad. Armageddon is upon us.

First, no one ever disputed that the sea was rising. Sea level has been rising since the last ice age. The graph below is from the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration (NOAA). So it is unlikely to be biased toward “deniers” – unless they want the government to come after them for being “deniers.” You can see that following the last glacial maximum there was a very rapid rise in sea level. But for the last 8,000 years or so the sea level increase has been gradual.

Because everyone knew that sea levels were rising progressively, what the global warming alarmists predicted was an “acceleration” in sea level rise. When did they predict that, ask you? Well, that was way back in 1988 in testimony before Congress, answer I.

In June of 1988 testimony was provided before Congress by various scientists, including NASA’s Dr. James Hansen, claiming that “man-caused” greenhouse gas emissions were responsible for increasing global temperatures and the subsequent inevitable acceleration in rising sea levels. The New York Times reported, “The rise in global temperature is predicted to cause a thermal expansion of the oceans and to melt glaciers and polar ice, thus causing sea levels to rise by as much as four feet by the middle of the next century. Scientists  have already detected a rise in sea levels.”

We are now 28 years into that prediction. So what does the NOAA data show us. NOAA tide gauge data has been collected at the Battery, New York for the past 160 years. As you look at the graph below, it is important to recall that no one “denied” that sea levels were rising. What is in question is the “acceleration” predicted by global warming alarmists. So, can you spot the moment when the sea level at the Battery, New York “accelerated?

Recall that the alarmists were predicting 4 feet of rise. That calculates to 1219 millimeters. The data below is in millimeters. 2015 was supposedly the “hottest year ever.” Do you see the “jump” in sea level rise below? I see a stabilization! And the maximum increase is less than 3 mm per year. At that rate it will take 406 years for the prediction of a four foot rise to come to fruition.

Other graphs are available for your perusal in the footnote.

Yet, despite this evidence, our President still maintains that global warming is a greater threat than ISIS. Looking forward to January 20, 2017.

And thanks to HP for sending this to me.

  1. Climate change denial is soon to be a crime in California. While it is unconstitutional to make a criminal law ex post facto and to punish for acts done before the act was criminal, it might be advisable to take this post down when Governor Brown signs the bill making climate change denial a crime. Allowing the post to continue to deny the truth, as our rulers have determine the truth to be, will certainly be a dangerous criminal act.
