No Obamacare for these surgical procedures.

Below is a graph of plastic surgical procedures done in the United States last year. Well over a million such procedures were performed.

So what’s your point, Dr. Filly, ask you? Are you planning a tummy tuck in 2016. Well, answer I, not that I couldn’t use one, but these procedures are not covered by insurance. You pay out of pocket for these.

And the above does not include botox. More than one million treatments are now being carried out each year (some of these are medically indicated and paid for by insurance).

You might think that with the omnipresent disastrous news about the economy, job losses, and foreclosures that the plastic surgery market would be dropping faster than your 401 K. You would be wrong.

  1. These procedures and much of what is “insured” today ought to be paid out of pocket. Insurance should be limited to major medical needs. Routine medicine and unnecessary procedures ought to be paid for by the consumer directly.

We agree completely. Insurance should be “Major Medical.” The remainder should come from Health Savings Accounts – the assets of which are wholey owned by the individual.
